Full Frontal Feminist: The First

October 3, 2011

I didn’t want to be a boy, ever, but I was outraged that his height and intelligence were graces for him and gaucheries for me.  ~Jane Rule

(2007). Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman’s Guide to Why Feminism Matters. Seal Press. ISBN 978-1580052016.

Jessica Valenti’s Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman’s Guide to Why Feminism Matters is actually a stellar book, despite all the flack she’s gotten for it. For one thing, her saucy and sarcastic language is perfect for the young teen crowd (her demographic). We are absorbing and understanding the timely  material about reproductive rights and douchebaggery. We don’t need in depth, complex content from more serious books just yet. I read this book at age 19 and it helped open the doors to more serious feminist books for the future. But this book helps hook the young.

That being said, we need feminist books to counter the absurd spread of anti-progressive, anti-feminism literature like “The Flipside of Feminism”, March 2011 which features a pregnant, white lady on the cover and tries to put down feminism and put everybody back on the right-wing, conservative side suitable for the 1950s. The woman’s place in the world is homemaker, mother and doter to hubby….blah blah blah. Valenti claims that when she begun she received threats of rape and death threats. What is it that these people don’t want her to tell us…..? If it weren’t so pertinent, they wouldn’t care.

I commend Valenti for being a pioneer in modern feminism and bringing to light the issues we need to hear about before we’re all smothered by more baking, sewing and diaper changing Stepford Wife drones.
